Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer, born on March 11, 1958, in Nineveh Province, Northern Iraq, served as the first interim president of Iraq after Saddam Hussein. He was the sixth person to hold the presidential office in Iraq since 1958. Appointed by U.S. military authority Paul Bremer, he was also a member of the Iraqi Governing Council, later becoming its president after the assassination of its head, Izz al-Din Salim. Bremer appointed him president of Iraq after Adnan Pachachi declined the position.
