Gerry Thomas was an American inventor best known for creating the TV dinner in the 1950s. He developed a pre-packaged meal served on a divided aluminum tray that was designed to be heated in the oven and consumed while watching television. Thomas worked for the frozen food producer Swanson and utilized aluminum trays that had been used for airplane meals. In its first year of sales in 1954, Swanson sold 10 million dinners, far exceeding their initial expectation of 5,000. He passed away in 2005 due to cancer.
