Gerhard Herzberg was a Canadian physicist and physical chemist of German origin, born on December 25, 1904, in Hamburg, and he died on March 3, 1999. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1971 for his significant contributions to atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Herzberg applied these techniques to study and determine the structures of diatomic and polyatomic molecules, and free radicals, which are difficult to study using other methods. His research also included chemical analysis of astronomical bodies, and an asteroid is named in his honor.
