Sir George Fenwick Smith was a notable Scottish trade unionist born on June 24, 1914. He began his career as a carpenter and became actively involved in the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers. He rose to the positions of National Organiser, Assistant General Secretary, and eventually General Secretary. He played a significant role in merging unions and served as the first General Secretary of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians. Smith was honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and appointed a knight in 1978.
