George M. Whitesides, born on August 3, 1939, is an American chemist and professor of chemistry at Harvard University. He is renowned for his work in areas such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, organometallic chemistry, molecular self-assembly, soft lithography, microfabrication, fluid dynamics, and nanotechnology. A prolific author and holder of numerous patents, Whitesides has received many awards, achieving the highest ranking in the Biological Chemists Index in 2011.
