He demonstrated that the deep water of Antarctica primarily came from the Weddell Sea. He served in World War II, contributing to submarine detection research. Later, he became the first director of the British Institute of Oceanography. Deacon was honored with various accolades, including the Royal Medal and being appointed a CBE.
