George Barany was a Hungarian-American historian born in Budapest on April 12, 1922. He was Jewish and was imprisoned by the Russians during World War II for three years in a concentration camp. After the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the subsequent Soviet intervention, he emigrated to the United States, where he pursued historical studies at the University of Colorado. He is known for his works, including 'Stephen Széchenyi and the Awakening of Hungarian Nationalism, 1791-1841' and 'The Anglo-Russian Entente Cordiale of 1697–1698'.
