George Akume, born on December 27, 1953, is a prominent Nigerian politician currently serving as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. His political career includes serving as Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs from 2019 to 2023 under President Muhammadu Buhari, and as the Senator representing Benue North-West from 2007 to 2019. He was the Minority Leader of the Senate from 2011 to 2015 and also served as the Governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007. Akume was re-elected Senator in 2011 but lost prominence in 2019.
