Gene E. Likens (born January 6, 1935) is an American meteorologist and ecologist known for his pioneering work in interdisciplinary long-term environmental studies. He co-founded the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study in 1963 and established the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York, in 1983. Likens is renowned for leading the team that discovered acid rain in North America, linking fossil fuel emissions to increased acidity in precipitation. His scientific contributions significantly influenced public discourse and government policy, particularly the amendments to the U.S. Clean Air Act in 1990.
