Born in Komló in 1943, he was an influential researcher and university educator who led many important excavations in Baranya County over the last fifty years. Notably, he started the research of the ancient city of Sopianae in Pécs and discovered the grave of Janus Pannonius. Kárpáti was also skilled at guiding tours in multiple languages, gaining recognition for his work.
