Futa Helu was a Tongan philosopher, historian, and educator born on June 17, 1934. He studied under the Australian empiricist John Anderson. In 1963, he founded the ʻAtenisi Institute, named after Athens to honor Greek philosophers, particularly Herakleitos. The institute started as a continuing education program for civil servants, expanded to include a high school in 1964, and later a university in 1975. Helu dedicated his life to education and the promotion of philosophical thought in Tonga, contributing significantly to the intellectual landscape of the region.
