David Charles Sumner, known professionally as Function, is an American techno DJ and music producer born in Brooklyn on December 1, 1973. His musical influences include notable artists such as Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. Sumner released his first record in 1996 through the Synewave label and is recognized for being the only non-Birmingham DJ to release work on the Downwards Records label. In 2004, he became a member of the Sandwell District collective, furthering his contributions to the techno music scene.
