Fritz Markwardt was a German physician and pharmacologist born on December 3, 1924, in Magdeburg and passed away on September 10, 2011, in Erfurt. He served as a professor and director of the Institute at the Medical Academy in Erfurt from 1961 to 1991. In the 1950s, he achieved the isolation and characterization of the anticoagulant substance Hirudin from leeches. He also published a textbook titled 'General and Special Pharmacology,' which went through six editions from 1972 to 1989.
