Friedrich Hirzebruch was a prominent German mathematician born on October 17, 1927, and passed away on May 27, 2012. He made significant contributions to topology, complex manifolds, and algebraic geometry, and was one of the leading figures in his generation. Hirzebruch is regarded as the most important mathematician in Germany in the postwar period. In 1980, he founded the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics and served as its director from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.
