He served as the mayor of la Seu d'Urgell from September 2021 to 2023 as part of a rotational agreement. Viaplana has been a councilor since May 2015 and was the president of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya in Alt Pirineu and Aran from 2012 to 2019. He was also a deputy for Lleida in the 2017 Catalonia Parliament elections. His background includes work in a forestry company and a brief tenure in public administration.
