Flossie Wong-Staal (born August 27, 1947) is a distinguished virologist and molecular biologist known for her groundbreaking work in HIV research. She was the first scientist to clone the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and identify its genes, establishing the link between HIV and AIDS. Wong-Staal held the Florence Riford Chair in AIDS Research at the University of California, San Diego from 1990 to 2002. She co-founded the biopharmaceutical company Amgen and later became the Chief Scientific Officer of Itherx, a company focused on hepatitis C drug development.
