Along with Wilhelm Ziehr, he founded the Schweizer Lexikon, releasing a comprehensive six-volume edition between 1991 and 1993, later updated in 1998/99. Mengis impacted the publishing scene in Valais significantly, overseeing the release of over 300 books over 40 years, and managed a large printing operation employing over 230 people.
