Langer established a molecular biology laboratory and has worked extensively on DNA sequencing and natural product research. In 2002, he became a professor of ecology at the University of Kassel, focusing on phylogeny, biodiversity, and the ecology of non-vascular fungi. He has also served as president of the German Mycological Society.
