He is notably a close friend of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and served as the pilot for Carter's 1970 gubernatorial campaign. Rabhan was imprisoned in Iran for nearly 11 years from 1979 to 1990, initially facing financial law charges and later accused of spying, though he was never officially charged. His prison experience deeply impacted him, which he described as a 'conscious coma'. He authored a book detailing his experiences titled 'Conscious Coma: Ten Years in an Iranian Prison'.
