Ernst Sigmund was a German physicist born on April 27, 1946, in Esslingen am Neckar. He earned his doctorate in 1974 and habilitated in 1980 in theoretical physics. Sigmund taught in Stuttgart until 1993 before taking the chair of theoretical physics at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus. He served as dean and university president from 1994 to 2006. Sigmund's research focused on transport theory in low-dimensional systems, electronics in molecular structures, and high-temperature superconductivity in ceramic materials, publishing 170 papers and receiving two honorary doctorates.
