Erik Horst Wolfgang Flügel (1934-2004) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist known for being a pioneer in microfacies analysis. He earned his doctorate in 1957 with research on hydroids and served as a curator at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Later, he became a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Flügel was recognized for his significant contributions to the study of reef evolution and paleoenvironments, publishing extensively and receiving several accolades, including honorary doctorates and memberships in prestigious scientific societies.
