Erich Mielke was a prominent East German communist official who led the Stasi from 1957 until shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Born in Berlin in 1907, Mielke was involved in significant historical events, including the purges and the establishment of a Marxist-Leninist satellite state post-World War II. Nicknamed 'The Master of Fear' by the West German press, he was instrumental in constructing the Berlin Wall and overseeing brutal suppression against defectors. After reunification, he was prosecuted for earlier murders and died in 2000.
