Eric Sunderland was a prominent Welsh anthropologist and academic, who served significant roles in higher education leadership. He was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University College of North Wales from 1984 to 1995, and held the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales from 1989 to 1991. Prior to these roles, Sunderland was a Professor of Anthropology and Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Durham. In his later years, he was honored with royal appointments, including High Sheriff of Gwynedd and Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd.
