Smith held the position of Professor of Zoology at Queen Mary University of London from 1950 to 1965. His accomplishments include receiving the Linnean Gold Medal in 1971, the Frink Medal from the Zoological Society of London in 1981, being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1958, and receiving a CBE in 1972, followed by a knighthood in 1977.
