Eric Mervyn Lindsay was an Irish astronomer born on January 26, 1907, in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. He studied at King's Hospital School in Dublin and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Queen's University of Belfast before earning a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1934. After further studies in South Africa, he returned to Ireland and became the director of Armagh Observatory until his death in 1974. Lindsay was influential in promoting astronomy in Ireland and contributed to the foundation of the Armagh Planetarium.
