After serving as a major in the Royal Engineers during World War II, he took over his family's business, Yarrows of Scotstoun, becoming managing director and later chairman. He significantly enhanced the company's reputation and secured numerous contracts with the Royal Navy. An MBE recipient, he held various roles, including Vice-President of RINA and Chairman of Clydesdale Bank, and played a key role in British naval shipbuilding until his retirement.
