Engelbert Winter is a German ancient historian born on April 7, 1959, in Castrop-Rauxel. He studied history and sports education from 1979 to 1985 and classical archaeology from 1984 to 1987. He completed his doctorate in ancient history at the University of Münster in 1987 under Ruth Altheim-Stiehl. Since then, he has served in various roles at the University, becoming an associate professor in 2001. His research focuses on the history of the Roman Empire, its relations with the Eastern Mediterranean, and ancient religious history, particularly the Sassanian Empire.
