Endel Ratas was an Estonian freedom fighter and politician, born on December 8, 1938, in Tarva, Pärnu County, and passed away on September 2, 2006. He joined the Estonian Freedom Fighters' Union in 1957 and was imprisoned in Mordva Republic from 1959 to 1963. A significant figure in Estonian independence, he signed the Baltic Appeal in 1979 and co-founded the Estonian National Independence Party in 1988. He also served in the Congress of Estonia in 1990 and received several awards for his contributions to Estonia, including the Order of the National Coat of Arms in 2000.
