Emile Meijer was a Dutch art historian and museum director, born on February 8, 1921, in Rotterdam. He is renowned for founding the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and serving as its first director. Meijer studied art history at the University of Amsterdam and worked at notable institutions such as the Centraal Museum and the Rijksmuseum. In 1973, he opened the Van Gogh Museum after an agreement between the Van Gogh family foundation and the Dutch state. Although he faced a brief controversy regarding budget overspending, he continued his career as a writer and speaker until his death in 2002.
