She served as the head of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Rhode Island from 1986 until her passing in 1995. Futas had earlier roles as a cataloger at the Ford Foundation and a reference librarian at Queens College. Additionally, she held faculty positions at several universities including Rutgers, Emory, and Washington. Her notable publication on Collection Development remains influential in the field.
