He also led Oslo Kinematografer from 1975 until 1993. Hjelmtveit played a key role in establishing several theatres, including Hålogaland Teater, Teatret Vårt, and Teater Ibsen. He was honored as a Knight of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and passed away on February 11, 2017, in his hometown.
