He co-founded the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center in 1958 and was pivotal in suicide research and crisis intervention. In 1968, he established the American Association of Suicidology and launched the journal Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior. Shneidman served as a Professor of Thanatology at the University of California for many years and authored 20 books focusing on suicide and its prevention, significantly contributing to the understanding and support surrounding this sensitive issue.
