Edward Witten is an American theoretical physicist, born on August 26, 1951, known for his work in string theory and quantum gravity. He currently holds the position of Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study. Witten is regarded as one of the leading researchers in mathematical physics and considered by some of his peers as one of the greatest physicists, even a successor to Albert Einstein. In 1990, he was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, and remains the only physicist to receive this distinction.
