Eduardo Mário Tavares (1919-1978) was the first permanent deacon of the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil, ordained by Dom Afonso Niehues on February 3, 1969, following the restoration of the permanent diaconate by the Second Vatican Council. He was also a public servant, teacher, and poet, authoring the lyrics of the old anthem of Blumenau and the anthem of Brusque. Tavares tragically died in a car accident while traveling to Curitiba with his wife.
