His research in the 1960s on cardiac muscle cell function laid the foundation for modern cardiovascular physiology and treatment, including the development of ACE inhibitors. Notably, he was the first to scientifically image cardiac muscle using an electron microscope. Sonnenblick's ideas about the relationship between human heart structure and function were groundbreaking. A peer-reviewed obituary described him as a giant in cardiovascular research.
