Dumitru Avakian, born on December 2, 1942, in modern-day Ukraine, is a Romanian Armenian music critic and professor. He studied at the National University of Music in Bucharest and furthered his education through summer courses in Weimar and contemporary music courses in Darmstadt. After 1990, he contributed to the editorial staff of the magazines Ararat and Melos, and collaborated on a renowned Dictionary of Musical Terms. Currently, he teaches theoretical studies, including music theory, solfeggio, musical dictation, harmony, counterpoint, and music history at the George Enescu National College of Music in Bucharest.
