Joachim Ernst I was the last ruler of the Duchy of Anhalt, born on January 11, 1901, in Dessau. He succeeded his father on September 13, 1918, but was soon displaced after the November Revolution, leading to Anhalt becoming a Free State. After World War II, he was imprisoned in the Soviet camp Buchenwald and died there on February 18, 1947. He married twice and had five children, with his family leadership contested after his death by his son Friedrich and brother Eugen.
