Douglas James Livingstone was a South African poet born on January 5, 1932, in Kuala Lumpur. His family relocated to Natal after his father was captured during the Japanese invasion of British Malaya. He studied at Kearsney College and later began working as a marine biologist in Durban in 1964. Livingstone earned two doctorates from the then University of Natal – one for his scientific work and an honorary doctorate for his poetry. He passed away on February 19, 1996.
