Dorothy P. Rice (June 11, 1922 – February 25, 2017) was an American biostatistician known for her contributions that led to the development of the Medicare health insurance program in the United States. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and worked for the U.S. government before pausing her career for family. After returning, she worked with the Social Security Administration, studying economic costs of illness. She later served as director of the National Center for Health Statistics and finished her career at the University of California, San Francisco, influencing tobacco settlement negotiations.
