She founded and expanded a women's clinic in Mulukukú, Nicaragua, in 1990, providing healthcare services to over twenty thousand poor and marginalized residents in the area during the decade following the clinic's opening. In a 2001 interview, she emphasized the struggles of mothers fighting to keep their children alive and the hope that drives her work for a better life amid violence.
