Ida Dorothy Ottley Cottrell was an Australian writer born on July 16, 1902, in Picton. Despite contracting infantile paralysis as a child, which left her wheelchair-bound for life, she became a notable author. Her debut novel, The Singing Gold, was published in 1928, followed by Wilderness Orphan in 1936, which inspired the film Orphan of the Wilderness. Cottrell spent some time residing in the United States and also had a career as an artist and cartoonist. She passed away on June 29, 1957.
