Donna Shalala, born in 1941 to Lebanese immigrant parents in Cleveland, Ohio, is a prominent American politician and academic. She served as the U.S. Secretary of Health under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001, making history as the first Arab-American woman to hold a cabinet position in the U.S. government. She also held the role of President of the University of Miami in Florida. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
