Donald William Sinclair (10 July 1909 – 5 September 1981) was the co-proprietor of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, England. He had a distinguished career in the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy. During World War II, he survived the sinking of two ships. Sinclair inspired the character Basil Fawlty, portrayed by John Cleese in 'Fawlty Towers', due to his eccentric and snobbish treatment of guests. Cleese also created a character named Donald Sinclair in the film 'Rat Race'.
