Donald Edward Machholz was an American amateur astronomer born on October 7, 1952, in Portsmouth, Virginia, and passed away on August 9, 2022, in Arizona. As an optician by profession, he discovered twelve comets until the end of 2004, including the periodic comets 96P/Machholz and 141P/Machholz. He was one of the most successful comet hunters and is known for discovering the non-periodic comet C/2004 Q2, which became visible in the winter/spring of 2004/2005. Additionally, he promoted Messier marathons and authored a related book.
