His invention of the eddy current proximity transducer set standards for measuring shaft vibration. Bently led the company as president and CEO until its acquisition by GE Energy in 2002. He remained active in various family-owned businesses, including those in agriculture, biofuels, and machinery diagnostics until his passing in 2012.
