He served as a professor of geology at Syracuse University and was recognized as a correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1955. De Waard contributed significantly to the field of geology during his career. He passed away on January 26, 2011, in Montgomery, Texas, at the age of 91.
