Dimitrie Stelaru, born Dumitru Petrescu, was a Romanian avant-garde poet, novelist, playwright, and bohemian figure. Orphaned at birth, he rebelled against a strict religious upbringing and turned to poetry. Overcoming poverty, he became influential in Romanian literature before and after World War II, merging Neo-romanticism with Expressionism and Surrealism. Despite facing censorship under the communist regime, he returned to writing and gained recognition in the 1960s. His later works included plays reflecting Absurdism. Stelaru died in 1971, with his literature largely ignored until rediscovered in the 1980s.
