Diego Cortes Asencio was an American diplomat born on July 15, 1931. He served as the United States Ambassador to Colombia from 1977 to 1980 and as the Ambassador to Brazil from 1983 to 1986. Throughout his career, Asencio was involved with prestigious organizations such as the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Council on Foreign Relations. A notable incident occurred in 1980 when he was held hostage for 61 days during a diplomatic crisis involving the guerrilla group M-19, which took over the Dominican Republic's embassy in Bogotá.
