He specializes in treating women who have been victims of mass rape by rebel forces, becoming a global expert and pioneer in addressing the damages suffered by these women. In 2014, he was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. On October 5, 2018, he was announced as a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Yazidi activist Nadia Murad.
