David Haddon Whitaker was a prominent British book publisher known for his significant contributions to the development of Standard Book Numbers, the precursor to ISBNs, during the 1960s. He served as editor of The Bookseller and later became managing director and chairman of J. Whitaker & Sons. Whitaker's leadership improved the firm's market reporting and he was instrumental in establishing the TeleOrdering system for book orders. Recognized for his contributions, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991.
